Blaine: In the year 2321 the people of the valley think Sonmi is a goddess.

Blaine: The character Sonmi 451

Balcony

Blaine: Luisa Rey is telling a hippie that all she could think about was throwing him off his balcony.

Blaine: Then in the next story in the year 2012, Tom Hanks' character throws a critic who is played by that same actor who played the hippie off a balcony.

The Journal

1849

Blaine: Adam Ewing writes his story in a journal.

1936
Blaine: Robert Frobisher finds and reads Adam Ewig's journal which has been published into a book.

Sixsmith

Blaine: Two of James D'Arcy's characters are the same character, Rufus Sixsmith, but at a different age. Rufus Sixsmith is the lover of Robert Frobisher in 1936. In 1973 Luisa Rey meets an older Sixsmith and after his death Luisa finds and reads the letters Robert wrote to him.

1936
Young Sixsmith

1973
Old Sixsmith

Luisa Rey's story

Blaine: Timothy Cavendish reading Luisa Rey's story by Javier Gomez in the year 2012

1973
Blaine: The characters Luisa Rey and Javier Gomez. Young Javier looks up to Luisa as a role model and he likes spending half of his time with her. And at the end of her story he says "This would make a great book.”

Birthmarks

Like I said six of the characters have the same birthmark of a shooting star. I think of it as playing a game. You're trying to guess where the birthmarks are going to show up on the human body.

Other stuff

Roger Daltrey look a like

Blaine: One of Hugh Grant's characters to me looks like a pale Roger Daltrey, the lead singer of The Who. Roger Daltrey was the person I was thinking about when I saw this character for the first time.

Roger Daltrey

Subtitles

Blaine: It's hard to understand what the people in the sixth story are saying. I understood a few things when I saw the film on the big screen, but I think that was because the volume in the theater was loud and I understood what was going on in the plot. After I bought the film I put on the subtitles whenever it would show the sixth story. I don't have to put on the subtitles on any more because after watching the movie several times I know what they're saying.

In this scene Susan Sarandon's character, the Abbess is predicting Tom Hank's character Zachry's future. This is what she tells him.

Bridge a'broken,' hide below.

Hands 'a' bleedin,' can' let go

Enemy's sleeping, don't slit that throat.

Photos

Blaine: Some of the actors make their appearances on photos. Mainly Luisa Rey's story.

1973
Old Sixsmith is showing Luisa Rey a picture of his niece and the two people on her sides are her parents played by Doona Bae and Jim Strugess.

Editing

Blaine: The editing was done by Alexander Berner

I really like how this one was cut from Chang's legs (2144) to Autua's (1849). I remember noticing that in the theater and then I forgot about until I watched the blu-ray.

Sound Mixing

2321 to 2012
The sound of a horse galloping to the sound of a train.

1973 to 1849
The sound of a gun fire turns into the sound of thunder.

2144 to 1973
Wave of water to Luisa Rey's car is drowning

Door

Blaine: Close to Sonmi's ending, she is describing to the Archivist what her vision of Heaven is like.

Sonmi: I believe death is only a door. When it closes, another opens. If I cared to imagine a heaven.....I would imagine a door opening....and behind it......I would find him there....waiting for me.

Blaine: And while Sonmi is talking, it cuts back to 1849 and Adam Ewing opens the door to his house and his wife, Tilda is on the other side of the room very, very happy to see him. So Adam Ewing is supposed to be Sonmi and Tilda is supposed to be Chang. The genders are the only thing that is opposite to what Sonmi is saying. Those characters are played by the same two actors, Jim Sturgess and Doona Bae.

Romance

Blaine: One of the things I really go for in "Cloud Atlas" is the love story between the characters Sonmi and Hae-Joo Chang and the love story between Zachry and Meronym. The thing that Sonmi and Zachry's stories have in common is that they meet the people who are about to change their lives forever. When Zachry and Meronym see each other for the very first time, it's love at first sight.
