X-Men: Apocalypse

Blaine: The after credit ending of “X-Men: Days of Future Past” shows Apocalypse building a giant pyramid with his four horsemen on his side. Seeing that after credit ending for the first time really made me wish “X-Men: Apocalypse” was already out. James McAvoy, Micahel Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence and Nicholas Hoult were already on board and it had a release date already set up. The question was who would play Apocalypse? But they found the right actor to play him and that is Oscar Issac. I think Bryan Singer was really excited about making “Apocalypse” judging from what I read online during the wait and I see a lot of him in this movie. I saw “X-Men: Apocalypse” with my friend, Luke during it’s opening week.

Plot (Spoiler Alert)

It is 1983 and the world is aware of mutants. A very powerful mutant has awaken after thousands of years. His name is Apocalypse and his plan is to destroy the world and remake it into a better place for his kind. In East Berlin, Raven frees a teleporter named Kurt Wagner from an underground fight club. Eric/Magneto has been hiding in Poland ever since his disappearance and during that time he married a woman and they had a daughter, Nina. His cover gets blown after he saves a co-worker of his from getting squished. The police show up and want to take him away. Nina gets worried for her father and causes her powers to go off. The police accidentally kill both the wife and daughter and Eric kills them.

Apocalypse has gathered four mutants as his followers (Storm, Psylocke, Angel and Magneto) and has upgraded their powers. Raven hears the news about Eric and worries about him. She goes to Charles so he can track Eric down. Charles uses Cerebro (the mutant-locating computer) and finds Eric with a mutant who’s power he has never felt before. Apocalypse feels Charles’ power and feels it can be very useful to control the minds of everyone on earth. Apocalypse and his followers show up at Xavier’s school and take Charles away. Havok tries to stop Apocalypse and ends up hitting the Blackbeard jet which causes it to blow up and destroy the school. Apocalypse forces Charles to send a message to the world of what to expect from him. Apocalypse needs a new body to transfer into and he chooses Charles.

It’s up to Raven, Hank McCoy, Jean Grey, Moira MacTaggert, Peter Maximoff, Scott Summers and Kurt Wagner to stop Apocalypse and save Charles. Raven and Peter go and try to talk to Eric while Jean and Kurt save Charles from Apocalypse and the others fight Storm, Angel and Psylocke. Apocalypse’s destruction goes across the world. Apocalypse is transferring himself into Charles, but Kurt teleports him out before it is complete. Charles has lost his hair. Raven lets Eric know that he is not alone and reminds him of the times Charles was there for him. Eric has been convinced to turn against Apocalypse along with Storm as well after she sees her hero, Raven fighting against Apocalypse. Charles and Apocalypse are connected and they fight each other telepathically while Magneto, Storm and Scott try to bring him down from the outside. Charles then tells Jean to unleash the full extent of her powers on Apocalypse. Apocalypse has been defeated and charges against Magneto have been dropped after the news gets out that he helped. Eric and Jean rebuild the school using their powers. Raven is going to teach mutants how to fight and defend themselves.

Blaine: I’m glad Wolverine was in “Apocalypse” because it’s hard to imagine an “X-Men” movie without him in it. I almost thought he wasn’t going to be in this movie and it gave me some kind of weird feeling inside. I felt it wouldn’t be complete without him. But then I saw his claws at the end of the second trailer for “Apocalypse” and I said "Yey!!!” I do wish Hugh Jackman was a main cast member in “Apocalypse” more, but a cameo is good too. He doesn’t have any dialog, he is just in there for four minutes killing the men shooting at him in the military facility.

It upsets me a little that things get worse for Eric/Magneto. He feels at peace now that he has a family, but then his cover gets blown, he gets ratted out to the police and they accidentally kill his wife and daughter. He feels he’s not meant to be happy, that there is nothing for him but the feeling of pain and anger. But I’m glad things get better for him at the end.

A lot of young mutants look up to Raven as a idol after they saw her save the President from Magneto on live tv. She is very serious in “Apocalypse”, more serious than the last film, “Days of Future Past”. She doesn’t think of herself as a role model, but the other mutants do and she doesn’t feel it’s right to crush their spirits. She does however feel the mutants at Xavier’s school need to learn how to fight and if they are going to listen to her then she’ll be the one to lead them.

Another thing I love is that I got to see more of Quicksilver and see another one of his speedy moments with the song “Sweet Dreams” by Eurythmics playing in the background. I loved him in “Days of Future Past” and it was very nice to hear that they were bringing him back as well. This time he’s trying to find his father, who is Magneto. He didn’t know Magneto was his father when he busted him out of The Pentagon back in 73. He doesn’t tell Eric, but he knows he will someday. I imagined a scene where Eric is about to leave the school and Quicksilver catches up with him telling him he still has family out there and Eric thinks he’s talking about Charles and Raven because they are like family to him, but Quicksilver says “No what I mean is….you have another daughter and she has a twin brother, who is me.” The twin sister Peter is talking about is Wanda Maximoff, who has the power of hypnosis and telekinesis.

My friend, Luke, is a comic book expert and Apocalypse is his favorite comic book villain. When Luke said he loved how they portrayed Apocalypse in this movie, that told me they made it true to the comics. I knew Oscar Issac was the right choice to play Apocalypse judging by his looks. Oscar became someone completely different compared to what I’ve seen him in the past.

I like that I see an "X-Men” movie where Wolverine isn’t obsessed with Jean. Actress, Sophia Turner said she felt free to play a different character outside “Game of Thrones” especially being apart of a big movie like this. She also said that her Jean is very different from the first three “X-Men” movies, she is very insecure and that she doesn’t full control of her powers yet.

Cyclops is played by Tye Sheridan, who I’ve seen in movies like “Mud” and “Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse”. I think that Tye based his performance on James Marsden (the actor who played Cyclops in the first three "X-Men" movies) because when I was watching Tye as Cyclops I could see James Marsden’s personality in him.

It’s nice to see Stan Lee make a cameo in an “X-Men” movie again because he’s always making cameos in all the other Marvel movies, but not all the “X-Men” movies. He did show his face in “X-Men” one and “X-Men: The Last Stand”, but we never saw him in any of the “Wolverine” movies, nor “X-Men: First Class” not even “Days of Future Past” which is kind of strange. It was nice of him to pop up in “Apocalypse" so you could say his when you see him.

The after credit ending to “Apocalypse” I feel leads to the third “Wolverine” movie. It shows men in suits visiting the Weapon X facility and everything there is on Weapon X and my guess is they’re going to use to make X-23.

“X-Men: Apocalypse” is one of my top three favorite “X-Men” movies next to “Days of Future Past” and “The Wolverine”. My rating on “X-Men: Apocalypse” is five out of five stars.
