Jason Bourne
a Paul Greengrass film
Plot (Spoiler Alert)A decade has past since Jason Bourne disappeared. Nicky, his Treadstone contact has hacked into the CIA mainframe server in order to expose their wrongdoings. The CIA track her down and that leads them to Bourne. Jason Bourne has discovered that he was never meant to be an assassin because his father didn’t want him to be one. Bourne’s father worked for the CIA and he was killed after someone put explosives in his car. Jason Bourne volunteered because he thought his father’s death was caused by terrorists, but it was really the CIA. CIA Director, Robert Dewey wants him dead and has a French assassin to do the job. Blaine: After the third “Bourne” film, “Ultimatum”, Matt Damon would be asked by fans if Jason Bourne would return because he wasn’t dead. Jason Bourne looked dead last time fans saw him, but he was still alive and managed to escape like always. People were also asking director Paul Greengrass the same question about making another “Bourne” movie. Another “Bourne” did happen in 2012, “Bourne Legacy”, only this one didn’t have Matt Damon as the iconic character. It was introducing another character like him. “Bourne Legacy” was no where as good as the original three films. For one, “Legacy" didn’t have Jason Bourne in it and people wanted to see him because he is the man. Jason Bourne is as popular as Indiana Jones. “Legacy” did have actors who were already involved with the trilogy. Scott Glenn, David Strathirn, Joan Allen and Albert Finney. Jason Bourne was mentioned in “Bourne Legacy” and towards the end, someone said he was found. Fans I think were more interested in Jason Bourne and seeing how his story would continue, rather than getting to know the new guy. Matt Damon is a fan of the character as much as the fans themselves, so he doesn’t mind getting asked about the character. Matt Damon is also happy that people really like Jason Bourne because that tells him he’s been doing a good job at the work he has put into the trilogy. Matt Damon was up for doing another “Bourne”, on condition that Paul Greengrass would return to direct. Matt Damon was very impressed with the work Paul put into “Bourne Supremacy” and “Bourne Ultimatum”. Paul knows how to make action exciting and make things in his movies extreme. Matt also feels Paul really understands what “Bourne” is all about. The question that came first to both Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon’s minds was what Jason Bourne’s next adventure should be. Robert Ludlum wrote the three “Bourne” novels that the films are based on. Paul and Matt couldn’t ask Robert what Jason Bourne’s next adventure should be because he’s been dead since 2001. Paul and Matt had to take advantage of Robert’s creation and figure out new details about Jason Bourne. Like maybe there’s a hidden secret to why Jason Bourne volunteered to become a professional assassin. Jason Bourne volunteered to be a trained assassin believing enemies killed probably the only family he had left, his father, played by Gregg Henry. Matt and Paul also thought about how times have changed over the past nine years after the third “Bourne” movie. There’s more digital technology today compared to 2007. Jason Bourne was able to be very sneaky and hide in certain places where no one can see him. These days there are cameras everywhere, security cameras and cameras on your phone, so it wouldn’t be easy to be invisible. The question was how would Jason Bourne live in a more enhanced world and how could he stay invisible after all these years? Christopher Rouse was the editor on “Bourne” two and three, and he and Paul have worked closely when it comes to editing a movie. Christopher was also the editor on other movies Paul Greengrass directed, “United 93”, “Captain Phillips” and “Green Zone”. Christopher had never written a screenplay before, but he had some ideas of his own for “Jason Bourne” like what Jason would be doing for a living and what job was suitable for him that public eye wouldn’t see and bear nuckle boxer seemed right for him. So Chris became Paul’s co-writer on “Jason Bourne” and their work relationship has grown closer. The ending to “Ultimatum” was saying Jason Bourne has a happy ending because he escapes and some believe he is dead. But others are still after him. No one is going to leave Jason Bourne alone. Jason almost had a life with his partner, Marie Kreutz, but then an assassin killed her and it crushed Jason. He’ll never live life the way he wants to with all these government agencies after him. Paul and Chris thought maybe Jason would be more miserable in this movie because he can’t find happiness in his life. Matt Damon felt it was more difficult to get in shape for this movie because he’s in his forties now. Matt Damon might have put on more muscle weight for this “Jason Bourne” movie. Jason Bourne looks all beat up in this movie compared to the first three. He has taken a lot of serious damage to the body. Julia Stiles is a member of the “Bourne” team and has been apart of the trilogy when it first began. Her character, Nicky Parson, manages to find her way back into Jason Bourne’s life twice and she does it again in this movie. You just can’t keep Nicky Parson away from Jason Bourne. Nicky is the closest thing to a friend Jason Bourne has in life, and she has been on the run herself for being so close to him. Nicky is the only person in the world that Bourne can trust. Nicky was supposed to be killed off in “Bourne Identity” and they shot a scene, but the director changed his mind and that was taken out of the movie and it’s a good thing too because Julia Stiles has had a blast in being apart of this trilogy. She loves working with Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass and she has gotten to see a lot of interesting locations while shooting these movies. Julia Stiles likes how Nicky can look after herself and hacks through stuff. It’s sad to say this is the last time we see Nicky's face. Like I said, everyone Jason Bourne is close with ends up dead. A new assassin is after Jason Bourne and kills Nicky while trying to put a bullet in Jason. Of course Nicky gives her life so that Jason can escape and discover a new truth about himself that she has discovering. Alicia Vikander heard that Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass were going to make another “Bourne” and she was really looking forward to it, being a huge fan of the franchise. Alicia used to share an apartment with her friends and they would watch the DVD box collection of the “Bourne” movies every Sunday. Alicia got a call offering her a part in the new movie and she was beyond excited. She was also in shock because she wasn’t expecting this. Alicia Vikander was rising up to stardom and everyone was wanting her in their movies. Alicia was already getting an offer to be in the “Assassin’s Creed” movie, but she turned it down to be in “Jason Bourne” instead. Alicia Vikander wanted nothing more than to be apart of a “Bourne” movie. Alicia’s character, Heather Lee, is in the CIA and is the serious type, of course all the characters in these movies are serious faces. Heather is also on Bourne’s side after learning that he is not looking to harm anyone, just to learn more about himself. Alicia looks serious in the movie, but she was full of excitement on the inside. This was a dream come true for Alicia. People say Paul Greengrass is a man who has seen a lot of places that are dangerous and crowded with people. He started his career off by making documentaries and he did them with his cinematographer, Barry Ackroyd. The first chase scene in this movie shows Jason Bourne and Nicky are riding through a massive demonstration, through fires that had been set, people throwing molotov cocktails and they where able to maneuver through all kinds of chaos. There’s two chase scenes in “Jason Bourne” involving two different types of vehicles, cars and a motorcycle. Of course fans know how extreme Jason Bourne can be behind the wheel and the amazing tricks he can do on a motorcycle. The stunt coordinator said the difference between a motorcycle and a car chase is motorcycles are easier to get through any type of space, where as cars are bigger and wider. “Jason Bourne" has that same style of action everyone loved seeing in the first three films. It’s all the stunt work, no special effects required. A few gadgets and wires involved with it as well. There’s also the camera work. The camera is everywhere. Inside and outside a car. Shooting from high point of views. They used all types of camera equipment for “Jason Bourne”, like crane and hand held cameras. The last thing that makes the action scenes so good is the way it is cut together at a fast paste. Vegas was nice enough to shut down streets so Paul and his team could shoot the movie there, but just for a limited amount of time. A big car chase happens through the streets of Vegas and it ends with crashing into a building. The building the the truck crashes into was about to be demolished, but before it was destroyed, Paul, Matt and the team wanted to use it to cause destruction for their car chase scene. Alicia Vikander wasn’t involved with the car chase scene, but she got to get a good look at it from her hotel room as they were shooting the scene and it was quite the show for her. Jason Bourne is always the one being chased in these kind of scenes, but this time it is Jason who is chasing after someone. It’s one of the coolest chase scenes you could ever see in a movie. It’s epic. Whether he has to live his life running and in misery, Jason Bourne will always win and survive at the end. “Jason Bourne” ends with the character walking on the streets of Washington DC looking like a free man, even though he’s not smiling. But still it looks like Jason Bourne can start to relax after being chased all over the world. It was exciting for fans, including me, to have Jason Bourne back, but Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass have decided to retire from “Bourne” after doing this new “Jason Bourne” movie. The ending to “Jason Bourne” looks like it’s leaving doors open to another movie for the character, but both Paul and Matt are positive that they are done with the franchise. I’m just glad we got to see Jason Bourne one last time. My rating on “Jason Bourne” is five out of five stars.      |
