A deadly disease has been spreading around for while and a family of three, Paul, Sarah and their son Travis take good care of themselves and keep their house secure until a stranger tries to break into the house believing it is abandoned. His name is Will and he is a survivor as well and Paul, Sarah and Travis don’t know whether or not to trust Will, but they decide to take a chance and allow him, his wife Kim and son Andrew to stay with them. Things go swell around the house, but Paul doesn’t trust Will and his family 100%. One night Travis discovers one of the doors is open which could mean there is an intruder in the house.
Travis’ dog is found wounded and sick. Paul and Sarah grow suspicious over Will and his family. Before Travis discovered the door was open he found Andrew lying on the floor of his late grandfathers bedroom. Paul and Sarah are having trust issues around Will, Kim and Andrew. It is possible they could be infected with the virus. Travis overhears Will and Sarah being worried that Andrew could be infected. Travis informs Paul and believes he could be infected as well after touching Andrew. Will and Kim try to run with Andrew. Sarah kills Will and Paul puts a bullet right through Andrew’s head. Very depressed over Andrew’s murder, Kim shouts at Paul to go ahead and shoot her and that’s what Paul does. Travis was right about being infected and shortly after he passes away. Paul and Sarah later await for death now that they’re infected as well after being around Travis.
Blaine: “It Comes At Night” is a combination of something post-apocalyptic and horror combined. The dog sensed something strange out in the woods and went out after it. The questions to what it was and who opened the door was never answered. It shall remain a mystery forever. I accuse Andrew for doing it because he was out of bed plus I don’t like him that much. Travis has these nightmares and it’s like he is having visions of the future knowing he’s going to die. I had a feeling Travis had a crush on Kim after the way he looked at her at the dinner table when Paul was discussing the rules of the house. One of his nightmares involves Kim entering his room, laying on top of him and bleeding out of her mouth. Travis also has a nice conversation with Kim one late night. Travis is at an age where he is thinking about girls and sexuality. Kim is older than Travis, but just by five or six years and she is an attractive woman. Paul is a concerning person who will do whatever it takes to protect his family from this disease and Sarah is very supportive of her husband.
I think that Will, Kim and Andrew deserved what they got after bringing an infection into Paul and Sarah’s house. Paul and his family were doing so well on their own until Will and then his family showed up, got their dog sick, then Travis sick and now Paul and Sarah. Paul and Sarah look like they are going to accept death because Travis is dead and with him gone I guess there is nothing worth living for if your only child is gone.
Writer and director Trey Edward Shults said the idea came from a personal element and that was losing his dad. Trey began to grow fascinated by putting a personal element into a fictional story and see how people would take that. Inspiration also came from classic horror movies like “The Shinning”, “The Thing” and “Night of the Living Dead”. Trey loved what those type of horror movies do to people with the fear and the paranoia. Trey also thought about it being like a family drama. It was easy for Trey to convince A24 that he wanted his next project to be “It Comes At Night” after his first feature “Krisha” became a success and the script was already finished and they loved it. Production for “It Comes At Night” took place in New York and shooting lasted six weeks. To become a family Joel Edgerton, Carmen Ejogo and Kevin Harrison Jr. would spend time together, had a picnic and discuss the things they knew they were going to go through in the movie. Carmen said it really had this bonding effect and have a sense of what it would be like if you had so little.
My rating on “It Comes At Night” is five out of five stars.
