The Hateful Eight

The 8th Film by Quentin Tarantino

Plot (Spoiler Alert)

Bounty hunter, Major Marquis Warren asks for a ride from a stagecoach on it’s way to Red Rock, Wyoming. Warren has to get the approval of John Ruth, also known as The Hangman, for him to ride along. John is chained to a prisoner he is taking to be hung by the neck till dead. Her name Daisy Domergue. John allows Warren to join them. As they travel through the cold and snow, Warren shows John a pen pal letter Abraham Lincoln wrote to him.

They pick up another fella along the way. Chris Mannix is heading to Red Rock as well to become the new Sheriff. The group goes as far as they can until they stop at a stagecoach lodge, Minnie’s Haberdashery. They cannot go further because of a blizzard. There they meet Bob “The Mexican", Oswaldo Mobray "The Little Man", Joe Gage "The Cow Puncher” and General Sanford “The Confederate”.

John Ruth feels one of the four men is not who he says he is and whoever it is could be working with Daisy. He confiscates their guns and has them dumped at the out house. Chris Mannix heard about the Lincoln letter and knows it’s not real. Major Marquis Warren played John Ruth for a fool. Warren doesn’t like General Sanford's racist talk. Chris won’t let Warren touch Sanford, but informs Sanford that he knew his son and that he made him suffer by having him travel through cold snow naked and then had him suck his cock and killed him. Sanford gets angry and reaches for a gun, but Warren shoots him dead before Sanford got a chance.

Shortly after Sanford’s body is buried in the snow John Ruth coughs out blood. Someone has poisoned the coffee. Daisy takes John’s pistol and shoots him dead. Warren takes the gun away, throws the key to unchain her in the fire and has all the men stand up against the wall except for Chris Mannix because he almost drank the poison coffee. Warren knows Minnie’s Haberdashery's owner well enough and knows that she wouldn’t leave The Mexican in charge while she is gone because she hates Mexicans. Warren discovers blood on one the seats and figures that she and everyone else who was in Minnie’s Haberdashery were killed. Warren shoots The Mexican to death and then blows off his head. The Mexican was only suspected of killing the owner, but Warren has to figure out who poisoned the coffee and Oswaldo Mobray and Joe Gage are the suspects.

Warren wants to know who did it and plans to kill Daisy if he doesn’t get an answer. Suddenly gunshots go off from underneath the floor and hit Warren’s genitals. Someone is underneath the floor. Oswaldo takes his hidden gun and shoots Chris Mannix while he is distracted and then Chris shoots Oswaldo back. The man hiding underneath the floor is Daisy’s brother, Jody Domergue and Bob, Oswaldo and Joe are working with him in order to free Daisy.

Warren lays down on a bed in pain and Chris is injured as well. Chris tells Jody to come up from out of the floor and get rid of his pistols or he’ll shoot Daisy in the head. Warren shoots Jody in the head dead. Daisy tries to convince Chris Mannix to turn against Major Marquis Warren and kill him. Joe Gage grabs the gun he had hidden underneath the table, but before he gets a chance to fire, Warren and Chris fire at him first. Chris listens to what Daisy is offering and threatening him, but Chris knows she is bluffing and decides not to go along with it. Daisy knew the coffee was poisoned and didn’t say a word and she almost let Chris die.

Chris feels weird. He has lost a lot of blood and passes out. Daisy goes for a gun, but it is hard with John Ruth still chained to her. Warren can’t shoot Daisy because he is out of bullets. Daisy hacks off Ruth’s arm to free herself. Chris wakes up and shoots Daisy down. Chris and Warren end Daisy’s life by hanging her. After she is dead, Chris asks if he can look at the forged Lincoln letter of Warren’s. Warren gives him the letter and he reads it. Chris and Warren lie dying.

Blaine: All the interiors takes place in a stagecoach and Minnie's Haberdashery. My dad said, "The exterior views, primarily of one of the stagecoaches in the snow (most in a blizzard) were shot in southwestern Colorado, near Telluride." My dad, who has been in that area a lot, thought most of them were shot along a backroad called Lost Dollar Road, that runs along the Sneffels Range and Dallas Divide, between Ridgway and Telluride, Colorado.

Quentin Tarantino said on "The Close-up with the Hollywood Reporter" that the film is like a stage play and he would like to direct a theatrical version. As most of the film took place in one big room, a cabin that was "Minnie's Haberdashery", all of the dialogue and the action moved from one part of the room to another, as the characters moved as they talked in groups or to one another, one on one.

My rating on “The Hateful Eight” is five out of five stars.

On January 11,2016, Quentin Tarantino confirmed that he would turn “The Hateful Eight” into a stage play

Music

Quentin Tarantino hasn't had much use for composers in the past. Six Quentin Tarantino films have had music in the background, but no music scores. For "The Hateful Eight", Quentin used his favorite composer, Ennio Morricone, best known for doing classic Westerns such as "For a Few Dollars More" and "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly”.
