Despicable Me 3

Plot(Spoiler Alert)

Gru and his wife Lucy loose their jobs of being agents after failing to catch a villain who style is the 80s. His name is Balthazar Bratt, a former child star who turned evil after his career was over. Bratt managed to steal the world’s largest diamond and plans on using it as a weapon. Meanwhile, the minions are sick and tired of all this goody, goody stuff Gru does. Things were more exciting for them when Gru was a bad guy. A lot of the minions leave except for Dave and Jerry. Gru later finds out that he has a twin brother who he was unaware of. Gru and his family travel to meet his brother, Dru. Dru is super excited to meet Gru for the first time. Dru shows Gru their father’s secret lair and tells him that their father was a villain. Dru wants Gru to be a villain again and to teach him how to be evil because he is no good at it.

Blaine: This is my favorite “Despicable Me” because it makes me laugh hard one with Dru's screaming and I love all the minion moments with them in a singing competition, being thrown in jail and being the DJs at a beach party. For each “Despicable Me” movie Illumination studios has made they give Gru something new to experience. In the first “Despicable Me” he learns how to become a father to these three orphaned girls. In “Despicable Me 2” he learns how to fall in love with a woman. When it came to the third movie, Illumination was looking at further life experiences and then they thought about introducing him to his long lost brother.

Gru having a twin brother that he didn’t know he had was on the top of the directors’ and animators’ heads and then they had to think how Dru would be introduced into Gru’s life. They had a lot of conversations about Dru. They decided that he would be the opposite of Gru. He would be very light and silly compared to Gru. They also wanted to go with something graphic like Dru always wearing white compared to Gru wearing black.

Steve Carell’s voice work in “Despicable Me 3” is some of his best work. He plays both Gru and his twin brother Dru. When I hear those voices I’m not thinking Steve Carell, I’m thinking Gru and Dru. Steve Carell, the directors and the animators would have a lot of conversations about Dru and how he should be. Steve would play around with his voice in order to figure out how Dru would sound. Because they are twins they should have a similar vocal, but Dru would have to have a different personality compared to Gru. Steve decided to make his voice sound lighter and energetic for Dru. Steve would practice Dru’s voice around his kids and have them be the judges of what they think of Dru’s voice.

The actors weren’t in the same recording booth as each other and that was a challenge because it was hard to find the right tone of their voices and respond to someone who wasn’t there. Of course for Steve Carell it wasn’t that hard because he plays two characters that talk to each other through a lot of the movie.

Dru should understand that it used to be all about plotting villainy with Gru, but then the girls came into his life and they grew on him and made him a new man. Then Lucy came into Gru’s life and showed that someone as nasty as Gru can be with someone. Gru developed something that he never thought he would have, a family. They made him a better person by showing him love and kindness and he does whatever he can to support and keep a roof over their heads. And Gru’s life keeps getting better because Dru has entered it and he is someone who Gru has fun with.

I love the scene where the minions are on “The Voice”, they sing the song “Papa Mama Loca Pipa” and the audience cheers and goes wild for them. The minions did a spectacular job and yet they still get busted and get thrown in jail. But life isn’t so bad in jail……if you’re a minion, because they are the tuff guys.

The villain in each movie has to be a worthy adversary for Gru. Someone who is challenging and funny at the same time. Everyone was excited for this villain because he is a guy who is obsessed with the 80s. I like this villain the most out of the “Despicable Me” movies and the reason why is because I like his line “I’ve been a bad boy”. Balthazar Bratt was voiced by Trey Parker, the co-creator of “South Park”. The directors love Trey Parker’s voice and know he is smart at being funny. Trey Parker was surprised when his agent told him that the people behind “Despicable Me” would like him to be in the third installment of the franchise because no one has ever asked him to be apart of an animated feature. Normally he does voice work in his own projects, but never anyone else’s. The reason why Trey said yes to “Despicable Me 3” was so that his daughter could see a movie with his voice because the other stuff he does is more adult like “South Park”.

My rating on “Despicable Me 3” is five out of five stars.
