Deadpool

Blaine: “Deadpool” is one of the most brilliant comic book movies I’ve ever seen with it’s humor and bad ass action.

Plot (Spoiler Alert)

Wade Wilson, a mercenary who doesn’t take anything seriously, has been diagnosed with liver, lung, prostate and brain cancer and is offered abilities that will cure his cancer. He goes through a procedure that he has been tricked into and the experiment makes him ugly on the outside, but gives a mutation that can cure his cancer. He escapes, but he cannot return to his lover, Vanessa, for he is afraid what she’ll think of him when she sees how he looks. Wade is out for revenge against the man who made him ugly and that is Ajax. Wade makes a costume to hide his ugliness and calls himself Deadpool.

Blaine: Stan Lee said that back in 1991, the comic book landscape was dominated by Marvel. And they were looking around for new characters to use and then Deadpool appeared in “The New Mutants” comic book. And he became very popular after that. Ryan Reynolds was introduced to the character back in 2004 while he was doing the movie, “Blade Trinity”, and he got to improvise and goof around a lot in that film and Ryan said looking back in a way he was Wade Wilson without even knowing it. Someone knew Ryan was the right choice to play Deadpool if they ever made a movie and Ryan didn’t even know who Deadpool was at first so the guy sent him the comics and Ryan read them all and fell in love with it.

It took a long time for Deadpool to have his own movie and Ryan Reynolds had portrayed the character before in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” back in 2009. And that version is different from what he really is in the comics because he is a little bit serious and was working for the bad guys and Deadpool, I would say, is someone who works for himself. But he was a jokester in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine”. It was Ryan Reynolds dream to play Deadpool in his own movie and after “Wolverine”, Ryan Reynolds gave options for “Deadpool” to be it’s own film and that the most important thing was to make it true to the comics and have him be the merc with the mouth. It also had to be an origin story.

Tim Miller doesn’t have much of a history with directing and basically “Deadpool” is his first feature. 20th Century Fox wanted Tim to prove that he could make “Deadpool” really good. So he made a two minute test of the fight scene with the SUV. And one of the executive producers said that test footage encapsulated the spirit of “Deadpool”. It didn’t convince Fox to make the movie at the time and it took a while until they contacted Simon Winberg (who has worked as a writer and producer for half of the “X-Men” franchise) and asked him to help support the project.

I’m amazed how this is Tim Miller’s first film he has directed and I’m amazed how good of a job he did with bringing his vision to life. And a lot of fans are not disappointed by how the film looks when they saw it for the first time. And Tim understands the comic book world and that’s why Ryan Reynolds and the others thought he was the perfect choice to direct “Deadpool”.

“Deadpool” is also a love story because the character has a romantic side to him after he meets Vanessa, played by Morena Baccarin, and through the film it shows their relationship and how serious it is between them. After he gets the mutation and all scarred up, he tries to see her, but it’s hard because everywhere he goes someone takes one look at him, they think ugly and he couldn’t take it if his girl thought that of him. But in the end he discovers all she really cares about is what’s inside and she loves him no matter what.

Like Wolverine, Deadpool can heal and is indestructible, but the catch is his skin on his whole body gets scarred up so he covers it up with the red suit. The costume designer said it took ten weeks to create a suit from scratch to finalizing the design, making all the choices of fabric and color and details all the layering of the suit. It was difficult for them to find the right kind of red.

What I love about the character, Deadpool, is when he is wearing the red suit, he’s something like a cartoon character with those eye expressions he shows while wearing the mask. He is also a killing machine and has fun with it by not taking it seriously.

There’s a lot of great Easter eggs in “Deadpool”. There’s a little figure of Wade Wilson as Weapon XI from “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” when his mouth was sown up and the swords came out of his hands like Wolverine does with his claws. Colossus handcuffs Deadpool to take him to Professor Xavier, Deadpool asks which one “McAvoy or Stewart?” and those are the two actors who have played Professor Xavier in the “X-Men” movies, James McAvoy and Patrick Stewart. At the very beginning of the film when it shows the view of Deadpool inside the SUV bringing pain on the bad guys, there's the People magazine when Ryan Reynolds was named Sexiest Man Alive back in 2010. And then a bad guys’ wallet has a picture of some guy in a Green Lantern costume and Ryan Reynolds has played Green Lantern as well back in 2011 and that movie wasn’t one of the best.

There were rumors that Hugh Jackman could make a cameo appearance, but they were sort of true. Even though Hugh Jackman didn’t make a cameo in person it feels like he has made an appearance. At the beginning of the film Deadpool mentions that he had to fondle someone’s balls in order to get his own movie and the name rimes with Polverine which is Wolverine. And then at the end when Vanessa removes Deadpool’s mask in order to see what his face has become, it’s covered with a cut out of Hugh Jackman’s face from People magazine when he was announced to be the sexiest man alive.

Morena Baccarin is no stranger to the comic book universe….mainly DC. Ryan Reynolds said that 400 people auditioned for the role of Vanessa and Morena just embodied it better than anyone else. She had the attitude and confidence they were looking for.

Stan Lee is always making cameos in the Marvel movies, so it’s like he is a part of the cast and in “Deadpool” he shows up at a location fans don’t usually get to see him in because kids watch those movies too. Because “Deadpool” is rated R, they had Stan Lee make a cameo as the DJ in the strip club.

The jokes I find the smartest are when Deadpool shows up at the Xavier school to ask Colossus and Nagasonic to be his backups and after that he says "It’s funny that I only ever see two of you. It’s almost like the studio couldn’t afford another X-Man.” It’s funny because it’s smart how Deadpool points out that there are only two mutants who hang around Xavier’s School and he brings 20th Century Fox into it. No other movie has done that before and that’s another reason it’s original. Another humorous scene I love the most is during the end credits when the cartoon Deadpool is riding a unicorn and giving it a hand job through it’s horn and rainbows come out as the sperm.

My rating on “Deadpool” is five out of five stars.
