Taking place in the year 1995, a member of the Kree, Carol is hunting down Skrulls, a species that can disguise themselves into someone else. Carol and the Skrulls crash land on Earth. While Carol is after the Skrulls she discovers things that were lost in her memories. For one, she came from the planet Earth. Carol meets Nick Fury, an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. and he helps her find out who she really is.
Blaine: The first female stand alone superhero movie has already been done when “Wonder Woman” was released in 2017, but Captain Marvel is the first in the Marvel Universe. Marvel Studios had been developing “Captain Marvel” for a while and at Comic-Con 2016 it was announced that Brie Larson would play Captain Marvel herself. Brie Larson spent a lot of time studying Captain Marvel for nine months in order to prepare herself for the role. She would read the “Captain Marvel” comic books while wearing a Captain Marvel costume. Brie dedicated herself to this project. Captain Marvel is known to be the most powerful character in the Marvel Universe, which was big for Brie. Brie Larson has taken on a lot of parts in her career where the character is really strong and it’s obvious there is no one else who could play Captain Marvel, but Brie. Brie has discovered how strong of a person she is herself through this experience. It takes a little while for Brie Larson to figure out how she is going to perform. Lucky thing for her she had plenty of time to prepare herself before “Captain Marvel” began principal photography. Prepping up to play Captain Marvel is a full time job, according to Brie Larson. Brie did some military training, cardio, weights, learn judo, boxing……she even pushed a jeep, literally. There’s a video of it on the bottom. Carol is not the type of woman who gives up. She is someone who really believes in herself. If Carol falls she finds a way back up. Brie is very much like the character because she believed she could do all the things this project required her to do and both her and Carol don’t give up. Carol’s also the type of woman who is hardly afraid. Carol is very strong and calm. She was strong when she was just human and she became stronger when she developed powers. Captain Marvel’s origin is that she was a U.S. Air Force fighting pilot in the 80s, then she became an indestructible being after this blast hit her and she believed she was someone else after being taken to the planet Hala and being trained to be a warrior by the Kree.
Samuel L. Jackson has played Nicky Fury eight times in the past. Fury always has been the type of character you don’t see much of, but in “Captain Marvel” you see a completely different Nick Fury who is along the adventure 85% of the way…..and he has two eyes. Nick Fury has always been a guy with a serious attitude, knows a lot, is very secret, shows up out of the blue and dresses like he’s in “The Matrix”. This younger version of Nick Fury is more of the exciting type in “Captain Marvel”. Fury is experiencing two things that make his life exciting, a superhero and alien life. Samuel L. Jackson and Brie Larson have become a team because this was there third movie together after “Kong: Skull Island” and “Unicorn Store” and “Captain Marvel” is their buddy movie because Fury teams up with Carol and they get along great. Fury is like Carol’s sidekick because she’s a great leader and he doesn’t have that many tricks up his sleeves yet. Because “Captain Marvel” takes place in the ‘90s, Nick Fury had to look younger. Samuel had to wear a wig and have these white dots painted on his face through the whole movie so the visual effects department could take years off his face.
Clark Gregg returns as Agent Phil Coulson, although he didn’t have that big of a part as I thought he was going to have. Phil Coulson was in “Iron Man” 1 & 2, “Thor” and “The Avengers”. Phil was believed to be killed in “The Avengers”, but then he was resurrected when the series “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” was created shortly after and he’s been on there ever since then. Now he gets to return to the Marvel movies in “Captain Marvel”. Clark Gregg is a fan of the other movies Marvel has been making and he has been taking his daughter to see every single one of them. Clark was informed by Marvel Studios that they were bringing back Phil Coulson at a younger age for “Captain Marvel”, he said ok and that was that. Clark was more excited to do “Captain Marvel” than the other Marvel movies he was involved with because it has a female lead and Clark knew his daughter would love to see that in a Marvel movie. Clark had worked with Brie Larson before in “Hoot” and Brie was a teenager at the time. Over the years, Clark has seen Brie turn into a very talented actress and he has become a big fan of her work. Samuel L. Jackson and Clark Gregg were the only two actors who needed the Fountain of Youth for “Captain Marvel". Not the first time an actor had to look thirty years younger in a Marvel movie. The visual effects department did it with Robert Downey Jr. in “Captain America: Civil War”. “Captain Marvel” also shows some other familiar faces fans have seen in a Marvel movie from the past, “Guardians of the Galaxy”. The characters are Korath and Ronan the Accuser, played by Djimon Hounsou and Lee Pace. Although their parts weren’t that big either, but I don’t mind.
The Kree are like exterminators because they are after the Skrulls so they can kill them. The Skrulls are believed to be the bad guys, but there’s a twist. This whole time I thought the Skrulls were plotting something evil, but they are just a race trying to survive. The Skrull leader has been fighting Carol this whole time, but then he decides to just talk and explain things. The real enemy is the Kree. They lied to Carol and used her as a murder weapon this whole time. Carol is frustrated because of that. Captain Marvel has no love interest, but she does have a best friend who is like a sister to her, Marla. Marla and her daughter are the only two people who are like family to Carol. Carol and Marla were the only women in the military back in the ‘80s, they were there for one another. Marla also looked up to Carol because like I said Carol was strong before she got upgraded and she was a great supporter to Marla. Carol is confused about who she is, but Marla is there to remind her how good of a person she is and that she is her hero. Lashana Lynch loves the Marvel movies and she had been trying to get in one by auditioning for a part, but she never got it. Lashana did feel something would come up. Being in “Captain Marvel” represented something Lashana really cares for and that is girl power.
There’s a cat that sticks to Carol and Nick Fury like glue. In “Captain America: The Winter Soldier”, Nicky Fury tells Steve Rogers/Captain America “The last time I trusted someone I lost an eye.” Nine months earlier while waiting for “Captain Marvel”, my guess was Captain Marvel is responsible for Fury losing the eye. Well I wasn’t right on Captain Marvel being responsible for the eye, but it does happen in the movie. It’s the cat who did it. Wasn’t expecting that. For years I thought Fury lost his eye in battle, but really it was just a cat scratch. Fury was right though he put his trust into someone, or should I say something. Fury trusted that cat and it looked harmless in the beginning, but then it reveals itself to be an alien with tentacles inside it’s mouth. Freaked Fury out a lot, but it also saved his ass from members of the Kree. Fury adores the cat, then it scratches his eye and that’s how he loses a site in one eye. The saying is “cat got your tung”, but in “Captain Marvel” it’s “cat got your eye”. Working with a cat was not easy for Brie Larson because she has cat allergies.
Carol goes face to face with the man who trained her, Yon-Rogg, played by Jude Law. Yon-Rogg wants to do things the old fashioned way by having the both of them fight with their fists instead of their weapons, but Carol decides to blast him instead. It’s like a “Raiders of the Lost Ark” thing where a guy with a sword wants to fight Indiana Jones, but Indy decides to shoot him dead instead. The “Indiana Jones” movies are Brie Larson’s favorite and she always wanted to be like Indiana Jones, now you could say she did an Indiana Jones thing.
Carol feels that she needs to make it up to the Skrulls after hunting them down and killing most of them. So she decides to help the Skrulls find a place where they can be safe. What would have helped is the tesseract, a cube that has been shown in other Marvel movies, because it can transport you anywhere in the galaxy without having to take a long trip. But “Captain Marvel” takes place in a time before they knew how that thing worked and Fury had scientists study it at the beginning of the first “Avengers” movie. Captain Marvel is Number 1# in the Marvel Universe, not just because she is powerful and strong spirited, but her middle name is Avenger. Carol leaves Nick Fury a pager so that he can call her whenever there's an emergency. Fury hasn’t had the need to use it until Thanos got all six Infinity Stones and had half of all things living disintegrated with the snap of his fingers. Fury disintegrated too, but managed to activate the pager to call Carol for help. Carol shows up at the Avengers’ headquarters and her looks have gone through a few changes over the past few decades. I’m looking forward to seeing Captain Marvel again soon in “Avengers: Endgame”!
My rating on “Captain Marvel” is five out of five stars.
