Burnt

Plot (Spoiler Alert)

Adam Jones is an American chef and after losing his restaurant he intends to start a new one with some of the best chefs he knows to make his four star restaurant.

Blaine: Bradley Cooper has always been a fan of cooking, it’s been a big part of his life. Bradley loved his grandmother’s cooking and he worked at a restaurant while he was in college. Bradley even played a chef on a television series called, “Kitchen Confidential”, which only lasted a season before it was canceled. Now Bradley gets to play a chef again, this time for a movie. While working at the restaurant, Bradley met the lead chef and Bradley found her to be incredible because she was so professional. Bradley met with a producer to talk about making a movie that involved cooking and the producer had a list of actors who should be in it. There was already a script that had been around for a while, but it needed some more work, so a new screenwriter was hired to make changes and Bradley would collaborate a bit. Bradley was very excited to being doing “Burnt” because like I said cooking is a big part of his life. While Bradley Cooper was working at the restaurant, he learned so much about how everything works and he found it all so interesting. Sounds like Bradley was learning a lot during his college years, inside and outside of school. And he continues to learn stuff as an actor to prepare himself for whatever role. For “Burnt”, it was re-visting a lesson from the past.

Bradley Cooper’s character, Adam, acts like he has anger issues and I couldn’t understand why the first time I saw “Burnt”, neither could my mom, but that’s because I wasn’t paying close enough attention. The reason he is upset is because he wants to be the best at what he does and he’s pushing himself and everyone else to do their best. It takes hard work to become a professional. Bradley did feel nervous playing this part because “Burnt” is about professionalism and as much as Bradley loves cooking, still he knows he wouldn’t have what it takes to be a professional chef. It meant a lot to director John Wells that this project had help from a real professional chef, Marcus Wareing, and his team and made sure that every time any of the actors stepped on set, it was a fully functioning kitchen, that they were prepared for and knew what they were doing. Marcus Wareing is a leading chef from London. He worked under Gordon Ramsay for years, then broke out onto his own. It is said that he has three restaurants in London. Everyone was lucky to have access to a talented chef like Marcus. Marcus wanted it to feel real when you see the actors cook in the film. The actors would get better after every take they shot, but they would also get annoyed, tired, aggressive because they were doing it all over again. But Marcus says that’s exactly what a chef looks like. So the Adam character is not the only chef who can be hard on you.

The first actor who was hired to co-star with Bradley Cooper was Sienna Miller. Bradley Cooper and Sienna Miller had just worked with each other on “American Sniper” and became close. Bradley wanted to work with Sienna again because he respected her as an actress. Once again Sienna would be playing the love interest to a character played by Bradley Cooper. Sienna’s character, Helene, feels she was doing fine before Adam showed up. Adam got Helene fired just so she could work for him. Adam’s putting a team of the best chefs for his restaurant. Adam can be hard on his team, but everyone stays strong. Sienna was impressed with Bradley during scenes where he is yelling because it felt so real. Bradley may not be a professional chef in real life, but he is a professional actor. Acting in those scenes was so powerful to both Bradley and Sienna that they wanted to take time apart the rest of the day after shooting. They’re still friends. Helene is a single mother. Her husband was a drinker and so she left him. It’s people like her husband and Adam that are making men look bad. However, Adam is better than the husband. All Adam can think about is work, but there is times he is told by his friend, Tony, played by Daniel Bruhl, that it doesn’t hurt to take time off of work and have a life. Helene couldn’t stand Adam and didn’t think much of him at first, but he grows on her. Helene does however have trouble reading Adam, until Adam tells her some things about himself and gets to know more about him. Adam is also better with Helene’s daughter, Lily, than the husband was.

2015 was Alicia Vikander’s year. She was really got out there and introducing herself to everyone who wasn’t familiar with her by being in six movies that year. By the time “Burnt” came out, Alicia Vikander had become a star. Alicia is only in a couple of scenes in “Burnt”, but she feels like a power presence and her character is mysterious. Adam may be hard on whoever works with him, but he knows how to make friends.

My rating on “Burnt” is four and a half out of five stars.
